Crime and Punishment
in the past, the peasants almost got punished for most of the crimes there are even crimes in the past that are not considered as crimes now. for example, Witchcraft, Heresy, Nagging one's husband and working on Sundays. what mostly surprised me is that working on Sundays was a crime. the king used to scare people by hanging a gibbet so all peasants can be scared and imagine themselves in there so then they become good people and not commit any crimes. in the medieval ages they used punishment so they can either punish or a crime or to obtain information.
the most common punishments were shaming, fines, Mutilation or death. those kind of punishments were used for different things, fine was used for minor crimes, Shame was used if you get drunk, if you swear ad if you tell a lie. Mutilation as used if you steal, hunt on royal ground without permission and Death was if you treason or murder. in the medieval ages there were three ordeal types, fire, they burn an iron bar and the person if his hand starts healing then you are innocent, combat, noblemen fight to death and who ever wins is innocent and they use water, they are tied in a chair and put in the water and if they floated then they are guilty if they drown they are innocent which i think is unfair because on both ways they will die.
